You definitely have room to elaborate on both aspects of the novel. The whole paper is supposed to be about risk and connecting that theme in your substory to the rest of the novel. Do you know what risks the characters in your substory are taking? Think about what a character is risking - do the potential benefits outweigh the potential costs?

The same recurring theme of love is in pretty much every story in the novel, as well as the outer frame, so using that as a connection might help you out there!

Add little information to all aspects of the novel and it will help make it longer as a whole. Rather then trying to relate the risk to every story because there are so many try really deeply comparing it will one of two of the other stories. It is not an easy task but just if you look closely there are many examples to be found. Good Luck!

Well, what do you think? Can you do some research on the symbolism of a tulip?

Also, how can you expand this question and the content of your post to make it more thought-provoking, a richer question for your readers to consider?

Helen, that is a *really* interesting cultural difference that you're pointing out! Are you investigating other ways in which this novel exhibits Western -- even specifically American -- traits? In what ways do its narrative strategies work or not work for you, as a Chinese reader?

Re-reading is a powerful method for active reading! As are dictionaries ... I always read with a dictionary open, even when I don't anticipate needing one.

Hi Helen,

These are great questions. See if you can answer them on your own ..
1. What do *you* think the difference is between wanting to climb the Eiger and wanting to have climbed the Eiger?
2. "wimped out" means he gave up, didn't try because he was scared. Given the story's plot, what do you think "out of condition" means in that context on page 13?
3. One more time: why do you think Marc was about to burst into tears, given what you know about the story?
